Google Me, is it real or just another “Buzz”?

The internet is boiling with a new rumor from various reliable parties that Google is entering the social networking game with a new product from its arsenal called Google Me. The rumor started when Kevin Rose (the founder of the famous Digg ) tweeted earlier this week that he has learnt recently that Google is working on a new project called Google Me.

It’s worth mentioning that the tweet has been deleted but from what has been gathered around the internet, Google is trying to get into the social networks game after their social products such as Buzz and Orkut haven’t produce the success Google was hoping for in the first place.

With GoogleMe; if the rumors turn out to be true; Google is trying to get back at Facebook. Google has thought that Facebook will not continue on the same growing rate. However, with almost more than 500 million users registered nowadays, Facebook doesn’t seem to be slowing down which is indeed is worrying Google according to the following answer from Adam-D’Angelo (who used to work for Facebook by the way”

Here is what I’ve pieced together from some reliable sources:

  • This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this.
  • They realized that Buzz wasn’t enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook.
  • Unlike previous attempts (before Buzz at least), this is a high-priority project within Google.
  • They had assumed that Facebook’s growth would slow as it grew, and that Facebook wouldn’t be able to have too much leverage over them, but then it just didn’t stop, and now they are really scared.

Eventually, Only “time” will tell whether it is a rumor or a real project from Google. If it is true it’ll be really interesting to see how they are going to handle the privacy saga surrounding Facebook these days and what else they are going to introduce the-google-way.
